The number of flood victims in Iran has reached 56. This was announced today by the representative of the Iranian Red Crescent.
Local authorities do not rule out that the number of victims may increase, as new heavy rains are expected in the coming days.
According to the Iranian press, army units have joined the rescue squads in remote areas and are evacuating thousands of residents from the disaster zones with joint efforts.
Last week, at least 22 people were killed in floods in the drought-stricken Fars region.
Iran has experienced both catastrophic drought and severe flooding over the past decade. At least 79 people died in the 2019 floods. The economic loss amounted to more than 2 billion dollars.
Experts believe that climate change is the root cause of the intensity and frequency of droughts and floods.
Those natural disasters in different countries, including Iran, have also made the issue of food security urgent.
