After the ceasefire, Azerbaijan continues to hold Armenian prisoners of war hostage: The statements of the Armenian Foreign Ministry and Human Rights Defender
August 30 is the International Day of Victims of Enforced Disappearances, established in 2010 by the UN General Assembly as a reminder of the horrific human rights violations caused by enforced and enforced disappearances.
In this regard, the Armenian Ministry of Foreign Affairs published a message, reminding that the fates of hundreds of missing persons and forcibly disappeared persons remain unknown as a result of the first and 44-day Karabakh wars.
“International humanitarian law aims to prevent people from disappearing as a result of arbitrary arrests, detention, and other violations during captivity. After the ceasefire signed on November 9, 2020, Azerbaijan continues to hold Armenian prisoners of war, including civilians, as hostages, and the fates of hundreds of missing and forcibly disappeared as a result of the first and 44-day Karabakh wars remain unknown.
The lack of cooperation on the part of the Azerbaijani authorities makes it impossible to accurately estimate the number of missing persons and to obtain reliable information about their fate or whereabouts and whether they are still alive.
Azerbaijan continues to ignore the decisions of the European Court of Human Rights regarding the use of interim measures to provide information on Armenian hostages in Azerbaijan, as well as the urgent measures presented by the International Court of Justice on December 7, 2021, which obliges Azerbaijan to stop its racist and discriminatory policies against Armenians,” the message reads.
The Human Rights Defender of Armenia also issued a statement on the subject:
“Regrettably, the ongoing conflicts in the modern world have created a “favorable” environment for enforced disappearances, unfortunately, we know this through our own example, and we continue to suffer the pain and constant battle of the victims of enforced disappearances and their relatives during and after the 44-day war.
According to the data presented by the International Committee of the Red Cross in August 2022, 303 persons are still considered missing as a result of the 44-day war in 2020.
The continuous Azerbaijani policy of providing distorted or no information at all on the prisoners of war, civilian captives, and missing persons is a blatant act of using human rights issues for political purposes, violating all norms of international humanitarian law.”
Armenia highly appreciates the US, and French ambassadors’ rejection of the Azeri invitation to visit Shushi
Armenia highly appreciates the stance of the French and United States ambassadors for rejecting the Azerbaijani government’s invitation to visit Shushi, the Armenian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Vahan Hunanyan said.
‘We reiterate our position regarding the inadmissibility of unilateral visits to the territory of Nagorno-Karabakh. We are convinced that the population of Nagorno-Karabakh should be involved in the programs of international cooperation and support. At the same time, we highly appreciate the position of those countries which, having a deep understanding of the conflict, refused to participate in such unilateral action,” Hunanyan mentioned.
Russia is ready to further support the negotiations on the demarcation of the state border between Armenia and Azerbaijan
The Russian delegation has expressed its readiness to further provide advisory and technical support to the negotiations of the delegations of the two countries regarding the demarcation of the state border between Azerbaijan and Armenia, to increase the level of stability and security near the border. The dates of the new meeting will be agreed through additional diplomatic channels.
