“Reporters Without Borders” organization published the Freedom of the Press 2022 report, in which Armenia ranks 51st, thus having the best indicator in the region. In the post-Soviet area, Armenia is inferior only to Moldova and the Baltic states.
“Despite the pluralistic environment, mass media in Armenia remain polarized. The country is facing an unprecedented level of misinformation and hate speech, especially in connection with the territorial dispute between Armenia and Azerbaijan in Nagorno-Karabakh,” the report stated.
According to the index, there are no journalists and media workers killed or arrested in Armenia․ To compare, in 2021 Armenia improved its indicators, rising from the 63rd position to the 51st position.
Among 180 countries, Georgia ranks 89th, Turkey – 149th, Azerbaijan – 154th, Russia – 155th, and Iran – 178th. It is noted that authoritarianism is gaining momentum in Turkey, challenging the pluralism of the media. And in Azerbaijan, President Ilham Aliyev destroyed any manifestation of pluralism. The authorities of both countries are relentlessly trying to silence their critics.
According to the report, Norway is the leader in terms of media freedom in the world. It is followed by Denmark, Sweden and Estonia. Finland completes the top five.
